Film sound

Often filmmakers do not pay enough attention to the film sound, especially in commercials and short event reports. In both cases, natural sound from the environment (well recorded) adds flavor to the production, but the film itself can exist without it, and the audience will enjoy it, if the picture is good and well suited to the music. However, in the case of an interview, poor image quality will not discourage the audience as bad recorded sound. I must admit that for a long time, I was not putting enough attention to the sound, which was a big mistake. In this article I would like to describe how Basic Home Productions handles audio recording, based on specific devices that are not expensive, and can significantly improve the standard of the film sound. I will not elaborate writing out the equipment, which is the best on the market or rented by us in individual cases. I will write only about devices that we have today and always in our backpack. I’ll start with a directional microphone RODE VideoMic Pro.
rode videomic proIt is a microphone, which we have purchased a long time ago and which was definitely one of the best choices we have ever made. This microphone is still the recommended directional microphone for all filmmakers for under $200. You should set it to +20dB, and mute the recording device. In this way you will get a much cleaner sound. This microphone works in many cases, but you cannot forget that it will catch the sound in the direction in which it is set. All sounds behind a person who speaks to the camera will be recorded. If you want to avoid it, use a directional microphone on a pole or a tie clip microphone. That’s why we have always in our backpack the RODE SmartLav+.
smartlavThe coolest thing about that microphone is that we can connect it to a smartphone and use an application to record high-quality sound. To synchronize the sound with the video, you can use the sound recorded by the camera or a directional microphone. Clap your hands to the camera, it will help you to synchronize. Sometimes we are using a dynamic microphone, which has better properties than the SmartLav+, but only in cases of quick interviews where he may appear in the video. For the sound recording, we are using the ZOOM H5.
zoom h5It is a multifunctional device that we recommend to everyone. When we record the sound with a pole for example, the sound from the directional microphone, goes directly to the ZOOM H5 recorder. We have in this device the opportunity to work on four parallel channels, and we can hook for example 4 micro ports. Cool thing is the backup option. If the sound is too loud, you have always the backup version which records 6dB quieter. In addition, we get a XY microphone with an option to purchase other mics (directional, dynamic). Every self-respecting filmmaker should treat the film sound valid as the image. The audience can only look at one picture at a time. Yet the audience can hear dozens of distinct sounds all at the same time and separate and process all the information… if it is done correctly.
