During filming in Morocco, we had the chance to test some interesting products produced by Syrp. All thanks to FOTO7 – Polish distributor of this brand from New Zealand.
Syrp specializes themselves in production of time-lapse equipment, which also allow us to shot smooth video footage. Thanks to it’s compact size, low weight and easy-to-use interface, Syrp products have found many consumers all around the world.
Let’s start with the most important product called Genie, through which the company broke through the global market. The continuous search for new locations and the fact that we are traveling privately a lot with the intent to capture newer and newer places, is forcing us to reduce the weight and size of our equipment that we can take with us. Genie is the ideal product in terms of these aspects. It’s weight is 1.5 kg and dimensions are 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm. The interior of this small device is equally attractive as the look. Genie connects with mobile devices via Bluetooth, through an application, which you can download on Android and iOS devices. Depending on the purpose, the device can be used for panoramic shots, or after changing the lower mounting, as a motor for your slider, jib arm etc. All thanks to the rope, which comes out on both sides of the device as pictured below.
In our case, Genie served us as a motor, for a 60 cm slider, which gave us the ability to precisely move the camera left and right. After fixing the rope on both sides of the slider and connecting the device to the camera, we connect it with our mobile device. After that we set the parameters such as exposure time, interval between shots and of course the range of motion (in this case in centimeters). By setting the above-mentioned parameters, Genie displays the time it needs to make the shot. After it is done, the display on the mobile device says “finish” and we can move to the post-production.
Another product that we had the chance to test is the Genie Mini. The dimensions of this little device are 9 cm x 9 cm x 4 cm and the weight is only 230 grams. It is unimaginable that it is able to carry equipment from 3 to 4 kg, depending on the axis. After we connect it to our mobile device via Bluetooth, we have to choose the rotation range (in this case in degrees). After mounting the Genie Mini on the Genie and connecting these two devices via a sync cable, we have a possibility of a full control in two independent axis.
Yet another Genie Mini mounted on a Pan Tilt Bracket (such as pictured below) gives us the ability to control the camera in three-axis.
Genie is linked to the first Genie Mini via a sync cable. The second Genie Mini is connected to the camera via a link cable to shutter the camera. We connect with all the three devices via the application, and we choose the parameters. After choosing the desired settings and range of motion, we have the ability to preview the shot in real time. This is a very useful feature which allows us to specify the exact movement of the camera (which allows us not to work by trial and error, as in the case of time-lapses is very time consuming). Of course, we have the opportunity to use the devices in various compilations. For example only two Genie Minis, as pictured below. The rest is a matter of imagination!
It was our first contact with the Syrp products and we can confidently say that they are very well designed in terms of operation and performance. Pleasant design and reliable mechanism makes them desirable gadgets for every filmmaker. Everything fits in a backpack (without the slider of course), which allows us to easily move between locations. Another advantage is the price. All the Syrp products have a reasonable price. Normally we would have to pay more for a precise, three axis camera control system. We recommend all the Syrp products and we kindly invite you to follow our website: basichomeproductions.com
